When I flew in Wednesday night I noticed that Fiddler on the Roof was playing at their Performing Arts Center with no other than Chaim Topol playing Tevya. He played in the original Broadway show and then in the popular film version in the early 70s. It is his farewell tour.

I knew I had to go. So I got myself a ticket and went last night. Wow. What an amazing performance. I love musicals anyway but this has to be in my top 3 (if you want to know, in order 1. Les Miserables; 2. Joseph and the Amazing, etc; 3. Fiddler on the Roof). The show brought tears to my eyes simply for the strong sound and soul behind the songs. But I admit, it had been a long time since I had seen this play/movie. I did not remember he disowned his third daughter for marrying outside the Jewish faith. The pain it caused his daughter and his wife and really him was tortorous. Religion is a culture, a way of life, a 'Tradition' and one that he held and revered so tightly. It was a great scene of the play and one that I wish I could really describe better but I just don't have the words. I'm so fascinated with religion in general and currently the Jewish religion (I've been on a Jewish kick lately). I'm ready to go take that theology class. :)
If this play comes to your city go go go see it!
Tonight it is off to the Devil Rays vs. Red Sox game with my college friend Clare. I haven't seen him for 12+ years. Cannot wait!
(yes, i am here for a tradeshow but the hours are goofy and as it turns out i have a lot of free time)

I haven't seen Fiddler on the Roof at all. Even the movie. I will have to rent it.
Mela and I are going to see Wicked this summer. Should be fun. I love seeing plays.
Have fun traveling. Hotels and airports suck!
How fun! I saw Fiddler in NYC but Harvey Feinstein played a really weak Tevya. It was a bit disappointing. My mom saw Topol years ago in Fiddler in London. I think he makes that role. Good for you!
I so wish I was at the ocean. Water has such a calming effect!
To combine responses to your last two blog entries, Fiddler is one of my top two or three musicals also; it must "run in the genes". Really glad you took the time to see it!
I was in Tampa on a business trip probably about forty years ago (literally) and I remember the beach as being sooo different from the Pacific Ocean beaches in that the water was shallow a loooong way out and they didn't have any surfing waves. I also remember being impressed with the amount of gray haired people in Tampa/St. Petersburg. NOW I ARE ONE!
Also, remember; I am not Tevya!
Dad
I am so jealous...& I love that are top 3 are the same.
